ROAR (Resources for Oakland’s Active Retirees) is a partnership conceived in 2012 between the Lake Merritt/Uptown Community Benefit District (CBD) and a small group of seniors from our community. Bobbie Bond, former member of the Mayor’s Commission on Aging, was appointed by the CBD to coordinate efforts of a new Senior Task Force group who were eager to participate in the revitalization of Oakland. ROAR has come out of the efforts of this taskforce.
Initial commitments have included (1) Feet-on-the-Street – walking and litter removal, (2) Snow Park cleanup days with CBD Ambassadors, (3) Passages on the Lake, an ongoing showcase of talents in music and the spoken word, co-sponsored with The Lake Merritt – Independent Senior Living. The Lake Merritt also hosts a lecture series, Conversations at The Lake Merritt, for area older adults and its own residents.
ROAR’s agenda for 2014 takes on a new mission: to link underserved senior consumers with the emerging and vibrant commercial market within the Downtown and Lake Merritt/Uptown Community. ROAR represents a mature group of active retirees who are mobile and internet savvy and who seek easier access to the market. To initiate the flow of information, our executive committee created oaklandroar.com, a website to link consumers to providers.
In order to expand our area of influence, ROAR plans to pursue the following outreach efforts:
Participate in the Adams Point Neighborhood Do-Good Project to install enhanced soil and drought tolerant plants around base of curbside trees on Grand Avenue
Initiate collaboration with the North Village Seniors: www.northoaklandvillage.org
Explore request for volunteers for the Oakland/UCSF Children’s Hospital
Promote Visual Arts programs and events at Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts
ROAR is committed to providing a smooth transition from paper-to-internet for its mature senior audience. The website will serve as a message board for location of resources, announcement of special events, and for businesses – a venue for advertising. ROAR’s goal is to build the new website and to produce a signature event on an annual basis.
ROAR provides resources, information and opportunities to assist active retirees to live a rich & meaningful life in our community. Through our website and social networking we strive to enhance seniors’ participation in the revitalization of Oakland.
